Here we have a great piece of slave clock kit! Often thrown in the skip when a system was decommissioned, relay units are hard to come by. This one is made by Gent of Leicester. I don't know enough about these to date it accurately, but would guess it is from the 1950's. Relay units were used for the following:
1. To reduce the overall voltage in a system.
2. To reduce the disruption a break in circuit would cause
3. To enable circuits to be isolated for maintenance etc
This relay unit is simple to understand. The 'prime' connections are wired into the main master clock circuit. This activates the heavy duty relay (a capacitor is also fitted to aid spark suppression). The sub circuit of clocks is wired to the 'sub' connections. The power supply for the sub circuit is connected to '+' and '-'. A rheostat is fitted so the sub circuit current can be accurately adjusted (usually 220mA for Gent systems). The unit is just under 10" across and housed in a heavy steel painted case. A glazed, hinged door is fitted to allow easy access. A lock is fitted but I do not have the key. A duplicate could be easily made by your local locksmith. There are a few scratches and marks to the paint finish but all in all the unit is in great condition and lucky to have survived.
Hope I've described this item fully, but please ask questions if I have missed anything.
Thanks for looking and happy bidding!
